Many unmarried couples jointly own a property together. Should they decide to split up in the future the courts will decide how the proceeds of the property sale will be shared between them. It has generally been assumed, in the absence of a deed of trust, that no account of needs or financial commitment of either partner is considered. This would result in an equal share between the couple. But a recent landmark case in the UK means that this assumption can no longer be relied upon.
